Week 12 Prompt
1. Where is the book on the narrative continuum?
- Highly narrative (reads like fiction)
- A mix (combines highly narrative moments with periods of fact-based prose)
- Highly fact based (has few or no narrative moments)
2. What is the subject of the book?
A sportswriter follows Bob Knight and the Indiana Hoosiers around for a year. He documents what that year was like, giving basketball fans behind the scenes content on the Hoosiers during the 1985-86 season.
3. What type of book is it?
I would consider this book a sports biography.
4. Articulate Appeal
- What is the pacing of the book?
- The pacing of this book is slow at parts, and quick at others.
- Describe the characters of the book.
- This story is very character based. Bobby Knight, the coach of the Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball team, is the main character. His players on the 1985-86 team are also huge characters in this book.
- How does the story feel?
- Nostalgic, riveting, exciting, ill-tempered, and passionate.
- What is the intent of the author?
- To share to sports fans what the Hoosiers were like at their peak, in front of and behind the cameras.
- What is the focus of the story?
- The focus of the story is what Bob Knight was really like as a person, not just as one of the greatest sports coaches. Also, the story focuses on the players on his team and who they are.
- Does the language matter?
- In this story, I believe the language during the narrative bits matters. There is explicit language at times, and it shows more about Bob Knight and the passion that his team had for winning.
- Is the setting important and well described?
- I don't believe the setting is all the important, although it is well described.
- Are there details and, if so, of what?
- I would say the setting details are the most when the writer is describing a game scene, and the environment in that setting.
- Are there sufficient charts and other graphic materials? Are they useful and clear?
- If I recall correctly, no there are not any charts. The copy of the book that I have includes photos of the team and Bob Knight about halfway through the book, with captions included.
- Does the book stress moments of learning, understanding, or experience?
- I believe the book does all three of these things simultaneously. This entire book is about a pivotal experience that affected not just Bob Knight and his Indiana Hoosiers, but a whole nation of sports fans.
- Why would a reader enjoy this book?
- (1) Learning/experiencing
- (2) Characters
- (3) Setting/time period
This sounds like an interesting read, but I wish you would have included the title of the book in the post. Other than that good job!
ReplyDeleteI am curious on what the book is because, although I haven't read it, sounds familiar. I don't usually read read sport non-fiction but if it has a more narrative than factual I would try it!
